Meta, the company behind Facebook, has announced the formation of a specialized team to tackle disinformation and AI-related risks in the lead-up to the European Parliament elections in June 2024. This move comes as concerns grow over the potential misuse of AI to spread false information and influence voter behavior.
The new team, dubbed the “EU-specific Elections Operations Center,” will bring together experts from various domains within the company to focus on three key areas:
-
Combating misinformation: The team will work to identify and remove false or misleading content related to the elections.
-
Countering influence operations: The team will monitor and address attempts to manipulate public opinion through coordinated campaigns.
-
Addressing AI-related risks: The team will work to mitigate the risks associated with the use of AI in spreading disinformation.
In an effort to streamline the process, Meta will also make it easier for fact-checkers to find and rate election-related content. Additionally, the company plans to introduce a feature for users to disclose when they share AI-generated content, with possible penalties for noncompliance.
As AI platforms like OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s Gemini gain popularity, concerns about their potential misuse have prompted companies like Meta to take action. By establishing this dedicated team, Meta aims to ensure that the upcoming European Parliament elections are fair and free from the influence of disinformation and AI-generated content.
